Musings of Her Bratness

Goddess Blessings on Yule Eve

I stayed home yesterday.....it's rare for me not to go into the workshop every day. Even my so-called 'days off' find me popping in for one thing or another. I decided I was absolutely NOT working yesterday! I slept in until 9 and spent the day reading and eating junk food. Bliss! I was dreading the evening when I'd have to leave the warmth and comfort of home to venture out into the snow and ice and drive 30 minutes to Manchester for a last round of gift shopping.

We made it to and from Manchester with little incident and were carefully making our way down the last back road home to the village of Henbury where we live. I saw a sudden flash of white from the pastures on our right and it flew right into the road in front of us. We had to stop very quickly and I realized it was a tiny owl so I jumped out of the car to make sure it wasn't injured.

As I squatted down in the slushy road there in front of the car, a Little Owl about the size of my hand blinked up at me. We stared at one another for a moment and I barely breathed from the beauty of this creature. After a long moment he flew off and I got back into the car. My insides were all excited and jittery like a combination of some huge spiritual fulfillment and the excitement of Christmas gifts to a child.

Tears sprang to my eyes and as we drove the rest of the way home I basked in the feeling that I had just been blessed by the Goddess. I have always held an affinity with owls, I think of the owl as my animal totem and familiar.....but this was my first one on one experience with an owl in the wild. It's something I will remember all my life.

Yule Blessings to you and yours and may your holidays be filled with warmth, magic, peace and the love of family and friends.

I leave you with this old Celtic Yule Blessing:

The food is put away for the winter,
the crops are set aside to feed us,
the cattle are come down from their fields,
and the sheep are in from the pasture.
...The land is cold, the sea is stormy, the sky is gray.
The nights are dark, but we have our family,
kin and clan around the hearth,
staying warm in the midst of darkness,
our spirit and love a flame
a beacon burning brightly
in the night.

New Scents for the *upcoming* New Year!

So I spent a few hours yesterday up to my elbows in essential oils and fragrance notes to come up with some new scents for you and I'm re-stocking a few old faves too.....these will all start debuting in January after I return from my 'long winters nap'.

Old Faves:

Madagascar Vanilla Angel Cake:
Madagascar vanilla is the finest and rarest vanilla in the world......we use the real thing in our perfume! Combine that with the moistness of rich angel food cake and you have a scent that will get you nibbled! Don't say we didn't warn you! The scent: The beautiful and mouth-watering scent of real vanilla, golden angel food cake, and a sweetened touch of buttermilk sugar glaze.

Cheshire Cat:(Wonderland Collection)
"We're all mad here." The scent: A crazy fun mad mixture of wild forest berries, fizzy grape soda pop, melon, citrus and pink sugar.

New Scents:

Wonderland Dreams:
Do you ever wish you could escape real life and take a magical trip down a rabbit hole into Wonderland? This scent embodies the wonderland tale from that rabbit hole to the shrinking/growing episodes, an opiated caterpillar ,sarcastic striped cat, descent into madness with a wacky tea party and other adventures.
The scent: earthy rabbit holes, marmalade toast, piles of frosted tea cakes, a steaming cup of milky tea, stolen tarts, secret whispering woodlands and lots of sparkly things!

Honey Vanilla Shortbread:
I was making a 'high tea' scent and halfway there this scent emerged and I fell in love. Deeply aromatic Scottish wildflower honey swirled with a delicate vanilla bean infused cream and impossibly rich buttery shortbread...the combination of these notes is absolute heaven! I *personally* LOVE this!

Amber Romance:
This is softly sensual and sexy without being overpowering. Just when you think it might be a bit too soft and delicate a striking single note of black cherry peeks through the beautiful blend of amber, black vanilla, and sandalwood. This is NOT one of the many 'dupes' out there...this is hand-blended and utterly unique.

Blushing Orchids:
This is so light and feminine! I love the heady scent of orchids but by themselves sometimes they can be a bit heavy for everyday wear. This is one of those scents you will reach for again and again because it will enchant you. Beautiful sexy notes of tropical orchids blended with Madagascar jasmine, and English tea roses with a delicate note of powder and antique lace.

Belladonna:
One of the most magical and dangerous plants used by witches...it's place in history is firmly rooted. Italian ladies of the court often used the juice of the Belladonna plant to dilate their pupils as this was considered an attractive feature as it mimicked the signs of arousal in women. This is also one of the main elements in witch's 'flying potion' that was used to anoint their brooms. At any rate what we have done here is to capture (safely) the intoxicating heady scent of the belladonna flower. Use this to create your own brand of magick! *wink* For those of you that enjoy 'darker' more exotic scents..this is for you. This is not just another floral....it's deep, dark, mysterious and a wee bit dangerous in a GOOD way!

Powder Room:
I love the scent of powder rooms in ancient, elegant old theatres! There's that amazing old world luxury about them with the velvet fainting couches, dark polished wood, ornate gilt framed mirrors. I always envision some character straight out of an Edith Wharton novel dripping with diamonds, enrobed in billows of lace, ropes of pearls and sumptuous brocade corset under her heavy velvet gown. I imagined a blend of her delicate perfume, rice facial powder, ashes of antique roses all enmeshed with the old world elegance of the theatre and it's own unique scent. If you prefer your scents to be a whisper of fragrance or you're just in the mood for something ultimately feminine...this is the one.

Midnight Thunderstorm:
Growing up on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico there is a scent that sticks in my brain that can instantly transplant me right back to my youth..... that of the late night thunderstorms rolling in off the water. That spike of ozone from the fearful lightening crashes, blasts of humid night air that carry the scent of crushed ferns and kudzu, and rain bruised blossoms with a touch of damp wood.

Sweet Dreams:
Soothing, aromatic and comforting....if you need to have a day that is relaxed, peaceful and without niggling little stresses...start off with this...or if you've had one of those days that is better left off the books...end your day with this scent and let it lull you off to peaceful dreamland. The scent: English lavender blossoms, night-blooming florals, Japanese magnolia, baby powder and a touch of vanilla.

Purple Flower Passion:
I asked my 6 yr old son Tyler what scent I should mix...he thought for a moment and said...Purple. Right...okay...purple. It makes sense, it's his favorite color and as a color it evokes thoughts of royalty and nobility. Well...I didn't want to go in that direction so it struck me...why not do a blend of purple flowers? As a rule purple flowers always smell amazing so I ran with it. The scent: Lavender, orchid, heliotrope,Alpine alyssum, pansy, lilac and violet. This is not for the feint of heart, it's a bold, bright and lively scent....but if you love purple...it truly does smell purple!

Samhain Collection now on website!

The long awaited Autumn/Samhain Collection........is now on our website http://www.poshbrats.com/

Please head on over when you get a chance and have  alook at these delicious new scents!

The air is getting crisp and autumn approaches!

So I've been busy doing some mixing for our fall releases....I get really excited when fall hits. It's my favourite time of year...the air gets crisp and redolent with the scents of log fires, ripening apples, dry leaves, and that amazing mossy loamy scent of the earth. As a witch it is also my very favourite and sacred time to recharge my spiritual batteries!!

These are a FEW of the upcoming scents:

Wicked Tavern Latte:
We live in the land of amazing taverns that date back to early British history. It's ingrained in the culture and daily life but it's the 'dark' ones we're talking about here. Seeing dark shadows out of the corner of your eye, cold spots on the way to the loo, and unearthly whispers just beyond your hearing range...you know you heard SOMETHING....but what??
The scent: antique Jamaican buttered rum, freshly ground & dripped coffee swirled with hot frothed milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg. Underneath that sticky swirls of black bonfire toffee & a buttery shortbread biscuit.

Vampyre's Kiss:
Back in the 80's there was this cheeseball horror flick called 'Waxworks' that my gf's and I used to watch.....not because we thought it was great but because there was a vampyre in it we lusted. Ohhhhhhh we used to sit there in shudders of horror and glee when he'd come on the screen. Sexy sexy vamps!
The scent: deep dark forest berries of bramble, black raspberry, wild strawberries & red and black currants are softened by 3 types of vanilla, Merlot wine, and a stab of earthy and exotic amber.

Ye Olde Maple Sugar Bucket:
The early days of Posh Brats saw us working with many many American cottage industries. One produced our famously popular Salem Witchery scents....one of those scents and hands down the most popular was Maple Sugar Bucket. Sadly the company that produced those for us went out of business in the recession. I took it upon myself to recapture that scent and give it an even yummier twist.
The scent: dark amber coloured Vermont maple syrup, fresh creamy butter, even more maple sugar candy, New England molasses, crisp fall leaves, a touch of bonfire cauldron smoke & the antique seasoned cedar wood of buckets used to collect maple syrup for untold generations.

Black Velvet Shroud:
The blackest most sublime velvet covering an antique rosewood coffin...in which lay our sexy vampyre. We know he is only resting until the dark night falls and the air becomes heavy with mist and the sounds of night creatures......when that time comes we'll embrace our dark lover again.
The scent: dark dark dark black chocolate, heady sweet black currants, tangy blood red currants, Bourbon & Madagascar vanillas, smoked spices, loamy black earth & a touch of church incense.

Death By Sunrise:
You've accepted the eternal kiss of your vamp lover and been re-born into a new and brilliant night-time world but you must rest before the first rays of the sun touch the earth or you will be dead by sunrise.
The scent: blood orange, tangerine, syrupy sweet pineapple, golden gateau d'or, black cherries, billows of marshmallow creme, vanilla bean souffle, and rich ripe sexy mango.

Mourning Shadows:
A lone dark caped figure stands in the shadows of a smoking pyre on which his witch lover was put to her tragic death. Grief washes over him and his tears fall as sparkling diamonds onto his pale cheeks.
The scent: Black pomegranate, blood red pomegranate, white funereal blooms, heady violets, 2 types of exotic musks, Cornish honey and a touch of Bourbon vanilla.

Absinthe Cafe:
In the Victorian age absinthe cafes were everywhere the world over. We are visiting any one of the many cafes in Paris with the exotic and heady offering. We cannot promise this is not touched with it's own artistic madness.
The scent: absinthe, wormwood, sacred hyssop, mad English mint, bitter monastic herbs, the dark polished wood of a Parisian cafe table, and a touch of aged parchment.

Fawkes Bonfyre:
Guy Fawkes....."the only man who ever entered parliament with honest intentions...". All joking aside, every 5th of November we in Britain honour 'the Guy'. Huge bonfires spring up everywhere and there is much merry making and setting off of fireworks. I have tried to capture that time in this scent.
The scent: bonfire smoke, blackened wood, ale, hard apple cider, burnt earth, and the rich wheaty scent of threshes fields of grain....all touched with gunpowder & gingerbread cakes.

Hobgoblin:
Hobgoblins are elvish little men often found within human dwellings, doing odd jobs around the house while the family is lost in sleep. Such chores are typically small deeds, like dusting and ironing. Oftentimes, the only compensation necessary in return for these was food. You must keep them happy for they are fond of pranks and tricks and their generosity can turn quickly to bad deeds of you cause offence. Feeding them foods they love should keep you in the good graces.
The scent: Rich custardy pumpkin pie in a spicy gingersnap crust, buttery sweet ribbons of butterscotch, mounds of cinnamon sugar doughnuts, fresh baked bread and a dark sweet sticky toffee pecan pudding.

Some days you have to improvise!

I rarely take days off . So much so that when I do finally take one, going back to work throws me off. I went into the workshop today with every intention of being brilliant and knocking out the icing for the rest of my fizzy bath cupcakes......
Well it was somewhat.....wet....today. Therefore high lovely peaks were just not happening. I had to settle for a more homestyle frosting look rather than bakery chic. It's when something annoys me I have learned to change direction and focus. I decided I would make a topping that was more like a moisturizing bubble bar.

It was such a strange consistency that I decided to take the leftovers and scoop it like ice cream.....it looks so authentic. I decided if this sets up the way I expect it too....then it will become a new product on the Posh Brats website. What do you think? Bubble Scoopz?

Oh and here are the fizzy bath cupcakes with the same solid bubble bath as an icing:

These are already on our website:

Pixie Party Fizzy Bath Cupcake £ 2.50
If pixies had their own soda fountain this would be the house speciality!! Sublime mix of fizzy soda, candy corn, pink sugar, spice, and a touch of peppermint candies.

Days off are essential......

I don't take that many days off. I work pretty much 6 days a week 16 hours a day......every day. It's just one of those things you accept as a business owner trying to carve your niche in a crowded market.
Annnnywayyyyyy, my 5 year old son Tyler has been patiently coming into the workshop with me every day now. It's his summer holidays and he's spending it with Mummy.......not too fun for him when it involves all manner of soap.

So today I decided we are having a day off and heading to the mall to see the new Shrek movie and perhaps pop down into Chinatown Mnachester for some lunch......

It's going to be a great day!

Grace and why I don't have it....

I think it is genetic....when I was growing up my mother was forever breaking her toes on the coffee table. Granted it was usually because she was running after one of us 4 girls.
Now that I am presumably 'grown' I find myself continually stubbing my toes, spraining my ankle/toes, or just plain breaking them.

If you've never done this before.....(you're either reallllly luck or lying your sweet little azz off)

The scenario probably goes something like this. The victim (let's call him Bob - it seems to be conventional) is walking happily along to his destination, the couch. Along his path, the hallway, he passes by an unnoticed object, the coffee table. With considerable force, poor Bob then swings his foot into the coffee table, banging his big toe very hard. At this point Bob panics, jumping on one foot, screaming 'Ow! S**t! Ow! Ow! O!'. Or perhaps the agony is so bad that his mouth opens but nothing comes out, the pain rattling through his head.

Now in my case the offending article was my husband's guitar amp......only in my world (and possible the worlds of other women (or mothers) married/mother to the next budding (or still hopeful) guitar god; does this kinda nonsense happen. I mean, c'mon why the guitar amp when we have a massive IKEA coffee table which is certainly more than capable of causing serious bodily harm.

Still...we come back to the fact that I am not the most graceful girl on the planet......and I am *always* barefoot. At 40 years old would it do me any good at all to take dance classes or 'pageant walking' to attempt to learn me some grace? Probably not. (grin)

I'm off to soak my very sore toes...... but here's an article I found to show you that it can *always* be a lot worse!

Only true Southerners say "sweet tea" and "sweet milk." Sweet tea indicates the need for sugar and lots of it -- we do not like our tea unsweetened. "Sweet milk" means you don't want buttermilk.

Notes On Healthy Living

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health.

It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than British, Americans or Canadians.
2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than British, Americans or Canadians.
3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than British, Americans or Canadians.
4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than British, Americans or Canadians.
5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than British, Americans or Canadians.

CONCLUSION
Eat and drink whatever you'd like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Something Wicked This Way Grows

"Flowers bloom as black as night

Removing color from your sight

Nightmarish vines block your way

Thorns reach out to catch their prey

And by the pricking of your thumbs

Realize that their poison numbs

From frightful blooms, rank odors seep

Bats and beasties fly and creep

'Cross this evil land, ill winds blow

Despite the darkness, mushrooms glow

All will rot and decompose

For something wicked this way grows..."

Siren's Call
Cornelius a Lapide said of Woman, "her glance is that of the fabled basilisk, her voice a siren's voice—with her voice she enchants, with her beauty she deprives of reason—voice and sight alike deal destruction and death." I'd say that poor guy had come under the influence of some pretty powerful feminine ways at some point, eh? All I can say is this scent could also be called man bait!

Regency Jewel
When I think of all of the great ladies and beauties of history.....I always end up in the Regency era. There were so many I felt the need to create a scent to honour these amazing women. I have taken a traditional blend that was a popular and closely guarded secret of French perfumers and added my own touches.
